A delicate headband to wear to the St. Patrick's Day celebrations. The headband is composed of two icords, a hairband and a small shamrock.
Pattern Information
Knitting loom: Regular gauge loom with at least 7 pegs. Sample was knit on 32 peg loom from the KB Basics Kit.
Yarn: Approx 30 yards of worsted weight yarn. Sample was knit with Knit Picks Comfy Worsted in Peapod.
Notions: knitting tool, tapestry needle, thread similar color to the yarn, and a regular sewing needle.
Other: Elastic pony-tail holder (hairband).
Gauge: not relevant
Size: Sample shown fits up to a head size 19/5 inches. Make larger by working longer icords.
Abbreviations
- k=knit stitch (not ewrap, may substitute with u-stitch)
- st(s)=stitch(es)
- m1=make 1. An increase, known as make 1. Work until you reach the peg where you need to increase, with the knitting tool, reach for horizontal strand between the two stitches, place this loop on the adjacent empty peg.
- k2tog=knit two together. A decrease.

INSTRUCTIONS
I-cords Headband
(make 2)
Leaving an 8 inch beginner yarn tail, cast on 3 stitches, prepare to work a flat panel.
Work a 3-stitch icord that is 16 inches long. Bind off leaving an 8 inch yarn tail end. Using yarn tail ends, mattress stitch seam both icords together, approximately for 1" (one-inch) at each end.
Using regular thread and needle, sew the hair elastic in place, as shown in the picture.
Shamrock Motif
(make 3)
Cast on 3 sts, prepare to work a flat panel
Row 1: k
Row 2: k
Row 3: k1, m1, k1, m1, k1.
Row 4: k5
Row 5: k1, m1, k3, m1, k1
Row 6: k7
Row 7: k2tog, k3, k2tog
Row 8: k5
Row 9: k2tog, k1, k2tog
Row 10: k3.
Bind off with basic removal method, leave a 6 inch yarn tail.
Block the petals.
STEM
Cast on 2 sts.
Work a 2 stitch icord that is approx 1.5 inches in length. Bind off. Weave ends in.
Shamrock Assembly
Petal Assembly: Using the tapestry needle and yarn tail end: fold a petal half way down (wrong sides together), stitch down in place. Repeat with other 2 petals.
Using yarn and tapestry needle, secure all 3 petals together by joining them at the center points. Sew the 2-stitch icord stem to the center of shamrock.
Assembly
Using regular thread and needle, secure the shamrock motif to the headband.
question ,I just bought your book loom knitting for babies and toddlers , when you say cast on 52 or 125 stiches what size loom are you using I have the Boye looms do I need other looms to do these projects thank you

Hi Jennifer,
The pattern also mentions the gauge of the knitting loom. If the gauge is regular gauge, then you will proceed with a knitting loom that is that specific gauge and has that number of pegs. I use mostly Knitting Board (kblooms.com) looms and they have this amount of pegs.

Not related to the post, but I have a question about the Kitchener stitch and socks. I’m using it to finish the toe of my socks (from your book), but it’s backwards – the backside of the stitch is what shows, not the knit side of the stitch. I have tried turning the sock inside out, going from the left side of the work instead of the right side, and switching the left/right entry of the needle, and nothing has worked. Note – I’m left handed, if that makes a difference. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help, and your loom knitting books are great.
